What is "the coffee price"?
The price quoted here corresponds to the futures contract traded on the ICE in New York, covering the Arabica variety and expressed in cents per pound. It is the most widely followed global benchmark, alongside the Robusta contract traded in London.
How do I invest in coffee?
Individual investors most often gain exposure through an ETF or ETC tracking its price, through CFDs or futures for experienced traders (leveraged, higher-risk products), or indirectly by buying shares of roasters and trading companies.
Why is the price of coffee so volatile?
Coffee is highly dependent on weather conditions in Brazil, the world's largest producer: a frost or drought event can sharply cut the upcoming harvest and send prices soaring. Global inventory levels and the strength of the Brazilian real also strongly influence prices.
