What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by a person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. It is a decentralized digital asset: no central bank or government controls it, transactions are validated by a global network of computers (miners) and recorded on a public blockchain. Its supply is capped at 21 million units, of which about 19.8 million were already in circulation by mid-2026.
How do I invest in Bitcoin?
Direct purchases are made on a crypto exchange (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken...), with the option to transfer funds to a personal wallet for better security. Since 2024, spot Bitcoin ETFs have also been available on traditional stock markets, allowing exposure through an ordinary brokerage account without directly handling the cryptocurrency.
What are the risks of Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is known for its high volatility: swings of several tens of percent within a few weeks are common, such as the near-50% correction seen between the October 2025 all-time high and summer 2026. Unlike a stock, it generates no income (no dividend, no underlying company profit): its value rests entirely on supply, demand and investor confidence. The regulatory framework is also still evolving across countries.
