What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a blockchain launched in 2015 that, beyond serving as a digital currency, can run "smart contracts": programs that execute automatically without an intermediary. It is the infrastructure underlying most decentralized applications (decentralized finance, NFTs, tokens). Its unit of account, ether (ETH), is used to pay transaction fees on the network.

How do I invest in Ethereum?

Direct purchases are made on a crypto exchange (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken...), with the option to transfer funds to a personal wallet. Since 2024, spot Ethereum ETFs have also existed on traditional markets. It's also possible to "stake" ETH to help secure the network and earn a reward, an option that doesn't exist for Bitcoin.

What are the risks of Ethereum?

Like Bitcoin, Ethereum is highly volatile and generates no guaranteed income: staking returns depend on network activity and can vary. Competition from other, faster or cheaper blockchains (notably Solana) is a closely watched risk, as is the evolving regulatory framework across countries.
