What is the FTSE MIB?

The FTSE MIB (Milano Indice di Borsa) is the benchmark index of the Milan Stock Exchange, created in September 2004 to replace the MIB-30 and then the S&P/MIB, inheriting its trading history. Administered by the FTSE Group since June 2009, it tracks the 40 most-traded Italian stocks, reviewed quarterly.

How can you invest in the FTSE MIB?

The most common route is an ETF tracking the index, widely available on international platforms, or futures and options traded on Borsa Italiana's IDEM derivatives market (part of Euronext).

What sectors dominate the FTSE MIB?

Banking and energy account for most of the index's weight, led by UniCredit, Intesa Sanpaolo and Enel, alongside industrial and luxury names like Ferrari and Moncler. Driven by the renewed strength of Italy's banking sector, the index broke through its 26-year-old dot-com-era record (March 2000) in 2026.

What are the risks and limitations of the FTSE MIB?

The Italian banking sector's heavy weighting exposes the index to the same risks as Spain's IBEX 35: sensitivity to sovereign debt (the well-known BTP-Bund "spread" closely tracked by markets) and to ECB decisions. Italy's chronic government instability is a recurring source of volatility, as coalition changes can rapidly shift investor confidence in Italian public debt, among the highest in the eurozone as a share of GDP.

How has the FTSE MIB performed during past crises?

2008 was disastrous: the index lost about 49.5% for the year, the steepest annual decline among major Western European indices. The sovereign debt crisis struck again in 2011 with a roughly 25% decline, as Italy sat at the center of market worries about the eurozone. It took the index 26 years to reclaim its March 2000 record (dot-com bubble), one of the longest recovery periods among major world indices alongside the Nikkei 225 and IBEX 35.
